With fifteen years’ experience as a professional dramaturg across multiple industries, I offer tailored, focused, selective dramaturgical support.

I am a founding partner of two major dramaturgical brands – subTEXT Dramaturgical Group and the Entertainment Engineering Collective, which provides a deep network and outstanding resources to solve any narrative problem.

I hold a PhD in dramaturgical analysis and have worked as a dramaturg with companies that include the Stratford Festival of Canada, the Canadian Stage Company, Soulpepper Theatre, Driftwood Theatre Group, the Shaw Festival, Poorboy Theatre Scotland, Arizona Theatre Company, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation/BTA Films, Kill Shakespeare Entertainment, and have strong industry connections through affiliations with the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival and the Literary Managers and Dramaturgs of the Americas.

I’ve had the pleasure of working with Toby on multiple playscript projects, and as a fledgling novelist. In each instance he went above and beyond, offering insight over multiple drafts, and drilling down on specific, persistent structural issues as those drafts evolved. He always manages to strike that delicate balance between blunt and nurturing. Whenever I tackle a new project, Toby is the first person I think to approach for feedback and continuing consultation. I can’t speak highly enough of his attention to detail, support, and dedication to his craft.

I hadn’t worked with a developmental dramaturg before, and seeing Toby’s integration with the creative team, his care in advocating for the playwright, and his expert facilitation of both the research process and a post-show talkback has inspired me to seek out more dramaturgical partnerships.

Not only does Toby have a great sense of what makes story work, he has a great way of delivering that knowledge: with humour, and without ego. Any storyteller can benefit from working with him.

I have learned so much about theatre collaboration from Toby. His enthusiasm, intelligence, and compassion are contagious. He always has an eye towards a deeper understanding of the world a play inhabits.

Neil Wechsler, Playwright

Toby is the most professional and dedicated dramaturg I have ever worked with. He is an immense asset to any creative team and an absolute joy to collaborate with.

I always feel safe and heard when working with Toby on a new play. He always comes to the table prepared and I leave each conversation motivated to continue the work.
